2022 Translation Prizes open for entries

Martin was the SoA's Head of Communications from 2016 to 2024.

On 30 September 2021 – International Translation Day – the 2022 Society of Authors’ Translation Awards were opened for entries.

The awards are for translations into English from Arabic, Italian, German, French, Swedish, Spanish and Hebrew, and the TA First Translation Prize for a debut translation from any language.

Also running this year is the Vondel Prize for a translation into Dutch, of €5000 (no unsolicited entries accepted) and the Goethe-Institut Award, for a translation of an excerpt of Die Fahrt by Sibylle Berg by an emerging translator, which is already open.

The annual awards celebrate excellence in rendering both contemporary texts and classics into English. The prizes reward translators of fiction, non-fiction and poetry from a prize fund of more than £15,000.

The Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize

The annual award of £3,000, established by Banipal Magazine and the Banipal Trust for Arab Literature, and sponsored by Omar Saif Ghobash and the Ghobash family in memory of his father, a passionate bibliophile, for translations from Arabic into English.

The John Florio Prize

A biennial award of £2,000 for translations into English of full length Italian works of literary merit and general interest, and generously sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute and the Society of Authors, in memory of 16th century writer-translator John Florio.

An annual award of £3,000 for translations from German into English, of full length works of literary merit and general interest, generously sponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, London.

A prize of £1,000 for translations into English of full length French works of literary merit and general interest, nmed after the celebrated translator of Prousts Á la Recherche du Temps Perdu, and generously sponsored by the Institut Français du Royaume-Un.

The Premio Valle Inclán

An annual prize of £2,000 for translations into English of full length Spanish language works of literary merit and general interest, established in 1997.

The TA First Translation Prize

Established in 2017 and generously endowed by Daniel Hahn, with support from the British Council, this annual prize of £2,000 is for a debut literary translation into English from any language, and is shared between the translator and their editor.
