Fight For Your Right: Back the Libraries Campaign

20 January 2016

Neil Gaiman - Libraries: 'the thin red line between civilisation and barbarism'

As you may have seen, the SoA has been supporting and publicising the My Library By Right campaign

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) is calling on the Government to recognise the statutory right of the UK people for a quality library service:

By statute Local Authorities must provide ‘comprehensive and efficient’ library services and Government must oversee and improve libraries.

These rights are not widely understood and are being neglected in the face of economic pressures. This is putting important principles at risk, including the ability to access a quality library service wherever you live and at times to suit you.

This is the same argument we have been making about cuts to library services and we’re delighted to join forces. Several prominent authors have lent their backing to the campaign but we’d love everyone to get involved in any way they can.

What can I do?
