Society of Authors’ Contracts Advisors Theo Jones and Johanna Clarke have returned today (Monday 13 May) with series three of their podcast series on navigating the publishing industry.
The first episode, ‘A fond farewell’, is a conversation with Nicola Solomon, who retired as SoA Chief Executive in April.
In the episode, Nicola discusses the successes and challenges of her 13 years of leadership, including the fight for Public Lending Right (PLR) on ebooks and the growth and increased inclusivity of SoA membership.
Seven more episodes will follow fortnightly, covering topics such as festivals and live events, copyright infringement and writing for video games.
We’re really excited to be bringing you this fresh new series of the Advisory Clinic podcast as we continue to explore this exciting format to increase our engagement with writers and their communities.
We hope that the series offers well researched guidance drawing upon our experience as Contracts Advisors at the Society of Authors. From the crucial role of collecting societies to the pursuit of copyright infringements, and from literary festivals to gaming, we hope that you will enjoy the content we have put together for you.
Co-hosts Theo Jones and Johanna Clarke
The Society of Authors Advisory Clinic began in April 2023 as a way to guide and empower authors of all types, whether they are members of the SoA or not. Over its previous two series, it has seen Johanna and Theo inform listeners on self-publishing, sustainability, negotiating contracts and audio drama.
In January 2024, the SoA launched SoA Sounds, a podcast channel to host the Advisory Clinic and other podcasts, including limited series Adventures in Radio, hosted by playwright Barney Norris.
SoA Sounds is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon and more. You can listen to the new Advisory Clinic series, all past episodes and other podcasts here.
