We enjoy strong links with other organisations that serve authors. The organisations below offer SoA members exclusive discounts and offers on membership.


ALCS

The Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society is a membership organisation, open to all kinds of writers. The ALCS collects and distributes money to their members for secondary uses of writers’ work. These include such things as photocopying, cable retransmission in the UK and overseas, digital reproduction and educational recording.

As a Member or an Associate of the SoA, you are entitled to FREE membership of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society.

Once you’re an SoA member, you can find out more information, by signing in to the members’ area of our website. On joining you will be given details on how you can access this resource.

If you are an existing ALCS member who is not a member of the SoA, you could get a 20% discount on your first year of membership. Please ask a member of the ALCS Membership team for the discount code before completing the SoA application form.


The Bookseller

Subscribing to The Bookseller magazine is the best way to keep ahead of the latest publishing industry news. Published weekly, it’s packed full of deal news, trade announcements, literary agent moves, author interviews and looks to the future.

SoA Members can subscribe to The Bookseller at a special 50% discount on the regular print & online subscription price of £198, and on the regular all-digital subscription price of £168 (now VAT exempt). As a subscriber, you’ll receive the weekly magazine in print and the e-edition of the publication which can be read on desktop, mobile and tablet. Unrestricted website access to all the book charts and news articles will also be granted.

British Library

British Library Reader Pass

Your Society of Authors card can be used to support your application for a Reader Pass for the British Library


Crime Writers’ Association

The Crime Writers’ Association aims to promote the crime genre and to support professional writers. The CWA has been providing social and professional support for its members for more than half a century, as well as running the prestigious Dagger Awards.

Members and Associates of the SoA are entitled to a 20% discount on joining the CWA.

This discount is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code.

Members of the CWA, who have not already joined the SoA, are now entitled to a 20% discount on their first year of membership. Please contact the CWA Membership Secretary at membership@thecwa.co.uk for the application code to quote when applying.


English PEN

English PEN is a registered charity working to to defend and promote freedom of expression, and to remove barriers to literature.

Members and Associates of the SoA are entitled to 15 months’ membership for the price of 12 when joining English PEN. 

This discount is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code.

Likewise, members of English PEN who wish to join the SoA are entitled to a 20% discount on their first year of membership. Please call the PEN office on 020 7324 2535 for further details. 


Historical Writers’ Association

The Historical Writers’ Association exists to promote, sustain and raise the profile of historical writing, both historical fiction and non-fiction. 

As a SoA Member or Associate, you are entitled to a 25% discount on membership of the HWA. This discount is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code.

Members of the HWA, who have not already joined the SoA, are entitled to a 20% discount on their first year of membership (applicable to Full and Joint Rate only). Please contact Tony Riches at tony.riches@btinternet.com for the application code to quote when applying.


The London Library

Founded in 1841 The London Library is one of the world’s great lending libraries. An extraordinary history, a vast borrowing collection and an outstanding building make this a unique place to read, write and be inspired. 

The London Library is offering SoA Members and Associates a 10% discount to join. This discount is only available to SoA members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code.


National Union of Journalists

The NUJ is the voice for journalists and journalism. It is an active, campaigning organisation seeking to improve the pay and conditions of members and working to protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards in all media.

Members of the NUJ, who have not already joined the SoA, are entitled to a 20% discount on their first year of membership. Please contact the NUJ for the relevant discount code.

The Journalists’ Local Authority Directory is a resource providing access to data and contact details held by local government authorities. Access is restricted but SoA members are allowed to make use of it. This access is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant URL and login details.


Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild

The OWPG are the only UK-based association of media professionals working largely or entirely on outdoor subjects. 

SoA Members and Associates are entitled to a 20% discount off their first full year of membership to the OWPG. Membership criteria apply. This discount is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code.

Members of the OWPG, who have not already joined the SoA, are entitled to a 20% discount on their first year of membership. Please go to the ‘Facilities and Discounts’ section of their website to find out how.


Poetry Book Society

Become a PBS member today to keep up-to-date with the best new poetry from around the world!

The Poetry Book Society, founded by T.S. Eliot in 1953 to “propagate the art of poetry”, is dedicated to promoting the very best contemporary world poetry from a wide range of publishers. Every quarter, the PBS expert selectors choose the very best new poetry books to award the prestigious PBS Selections: PBS Choice, 4 Recommendations, Special Commendation, Translation, Pamphlet & Wild Card Choice.

Society of Authors’ members will receive a 10% discount on the PBS Full and Translation Memberships. This discount is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code.


The Poetry Cafe

Members and Associates of the SoA will be given free membership of The Poetry Society’s Poetry Cafe at 22 Betterton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9BU.

Please note that membership of the cafe is not the same as membership of The Poetry Society. Discounted hire fees for the cafe basement are only available to Poetry Society members. 


Professional Writing Academy

Professional Writing Academy has been designing and delivering world lass online writing courses since 2009. They are offering some of their more advanced courses with a 10% discount. This discount is only available to members. Romantic Novelists’ Association

The Romantic Novelists’ Association was formed in 1960 to promote romantic fiction and to encourage good writing, and now represents more than 700 writers, agents, editors and other publishing professionals.

Members and Associates of the Society are entitled to a 20% discount on on their first year’s Full or Associate membership of the RNA. This discount is only available to members. Once you are a member you will have access to the members’ area where you find the relevant discount code..

Royal Over-Seas League

This club, with premises in central London, offers Members and Associates of the Society of Authors a 25% joining fee discount.

Royal Society of Literature

The Royal Society of Literature has been nurturing, celebrating and defending all that is best in British literature, past and present, since 1820.

Union Club
