Surrey Group: Producing a Zine
11 March @ 12:00 - 14:00 GMT
Free
Join the Surrey Group on Tuesday 11 March from 12pm for their next in-person lunchtime meet-up to discuss producing a zine with author and photographer John Walmsley.
‘In recent years, I have learnt to self-publish books (3 so far @£20 and £25), but photobooks never make their costs back. Then I tried zines/booklets (6 so far @£7) and found these can and do make their costs back. They are A5, 36-40 pages, softback and, as of today, have all been accepted into the National Art Library at the V&A. They are for sale from my website and from many galleries up and down the country. I had to learn about paper finishes, preparing the image files so we did not have over-inking, how to design the pages, and how to deal directly with the printing house. It took three goes to get it right.
When I do book fairs, it’s noticable that people look at the books but don’t buy. They do buy these zines, sometimes two or three at once. It seems to work for me, a photographer, but could it work for text-based authors?’
We’ll meet at The Seahorse, 52-54 The Street, Shalford, Guildford, GU4 8BU.
All writerly and bookish guests welcome!
