Feeling rejected? Rejections and how to deal with them!

After 30 rejections, Stephen King threw his novel Carrie into the “trash” assuming it was useless. John Grisham’s A Time to Kill was also rejected 20 times. T.S. Eliot rejected Orwell’s Animal Farm because he did not agree with its political stance. Lord of the Flies was considered “rubbish and dull”. John le Carre’s first book, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, was rejected on the basis that “it didn’t have any future”… ahem!

These novels are classics and bestsellers in their genre, so how do we deal with our own rejections? Each one of us could have written the next classic, but how many classics have gone unpublished? Join us to discuss how we deal with rejection, from soldiering on, asking for clarification and dealing with how it feels.

These and other questions are up for discussion. Bring your favourite rejections and be ready to resend!

The venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey, Cranham, GL4 8EX. There is a large, free car park, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. The meeting room is immediately to your left on entering, with toilets opposite. The café to the right serves a great selection of non-alcoholic refreshments, delicious cake etc.

If you have accessibility issues, keep driving: there are two disabled spaces just to the left of the doorway. While the café is generously offering us the meeting room free of charge, please bring a plastic card or cash to pay for your own refreshments.

Local group meet-ups are free to attend. To join us, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people to expect.
