We were saddened to hear of the death on 29 July 2025 of the beloved children’s author Allan Ahlberg.
Ahlberg was a former primary school teacher, before working with his late wife Janet to create award-winning picture books including Each Peach Pear Plum and The Jolly Postman, both winners of the Kate Greenaway Medal.
After Janet’s death in 1994, he worked with other renowned illustrators such as Raymond Briggs, and his daughter Jessica Ahlberg.
He joined the SoA in 1987 and became a fellow in 1999. Ahlberg was an active member of our Children’s Writers and Illustrators Group, contributing to conferences and events throughout his career.
Abie Longstaff, chair of our Children’s Writers and Illustrators Group said:
“What a legacy Allan left! As with the very finest of picture books, the work of the Ahlbergs bridged generations. My mother read their stories to me and I, in turn, read them to my younger sisters, and later to my own children. Even today, when I open the books, I still hear my mother’s voice reading me Peepo… and I could probably recite Each Peach Pear Plum in my sleep.”
We send our best wishes to his loved ones.
