We were saddened to hear of the death on 1 January 2025 of author and critic David Lodge.
Lodge was best known for his comic novels which focused on campus life and academia, Changing Places, How Far Can You Go? and the Sunday Express Book of the Year Nice Work, published in 1988, which was also Booker Prize nominated. Nice Work was later adapted into a four-part BBC series. As well as novels, Lodge wrote non-fiction explorations of structuralism, and screenplays.
Lodge joined the Society of Authors in 1984, and later served on the Management Committee from 1988 to 1991. In 1989, Lodge chaired the Betty Trask Prize judging panel and in 1994, he became an SoA Fellow. In 1998, Lodge was awarded a CBE. As part of the SoA, Lodge was a signatory and campaigner of increased Public Lending Right in the 2000s.
