In response to the Department for International Trade’s set of consultations on prospective trade agreements, the Society of Authors has called on the Government to ensure that copyright is not used as a bargaining chip in trade negotiations.
The Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market has won the support of MEPs in Brussels, meaning that it can advance to the next stage in the legislative process.
We are urging our members and supporters to write to their MEPs asking them to the support the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. MEPs will debate and vote on the Directive on 12 September.
MEPs have voted to reject the EU’s Copyright Directive in its current form, and will return to debate the issue in September.
Thousands of freelance writers are due to receive a total of more than $9 million as compensation for copyright infringement by electronic database, newspaper, and magazine publishers, including Dow Jones, The New York Times, and Knight Ridder.
