Sophie Calon is a Welsh author and journalist, born and raised in Cardiff.

Her first book, Long Going (Honno Press, 2025), is a memoir of her dad who drank. It sold out within a fortnight, and Honno had to order three print runs within the first fifteen weeks. Long Going was endorsed by Jacqueline Wilson, Louis de Bernières, Amy Liptrot, and others. The Bookseller selected the memoir among its top five picks in the magazine’s annual Wales focus.

Sophie was selected as a Writer at Work for the 2026 Hay Festival, and featured on the programme in conversation with Tiffany Murray. Sophie has spoken at more than twenty-five events, from bookshops such as Blackwells and Waterstones to charities such as the Huggard Centre and Recovery Cymru. Sophie has discussed her work on BBC Radio Wales’ Arts Show special at the 2025 Hay Festival and BBC Radio Bristol’s afternoon show.

Sophie’s writing has appeared in local and national media, including The Guardian, The TLS, Literary Review, Folding Rock, BBC Cymru, and Big Issue. State-educated, Sophie studied Classics at Oxford University then trained as a journalist in her hometown. She is represented by Philip Gwyn Jones at Greyhound Literary.

Sophie lives with her husband and daughter on a hilltop near Hay-on-Wye, where they manage a nature restoration project. She is currently working on her second book, and is active on Instagram @sophie_calon_.
