Tony Hao is a New Haven, Connecticut-based Chinese-to-English literary translator and writer. Authors he has translated include Taiwanese novelist Tong Wei-Ger 童偉格, Chinese short story writer Ban Yu 班宇, and Chinese essayist Xiao Hai 小海.
His debut book-length translation, Adrift in the South, a memoir by Chinese worker-poet Xiao Hai, is forthcoming with Granta Magazine Editions in May, 2026. It was selected for the PEN Translates Grant in Feb 2026.
His words have appeared and are forthcoming in Granta, The Georgia Review, The Common, The Offing, and elsewhere. His work has been recognized by the Granum Foundation Translation Prize, Art Omi Writers: Translation Lab, the Vermont Studio Center, BCLT’s Advanced Translation Workshop, the Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference, and elsewhere.
He is a former Literature from Taiwan mentee of ALTA’s Emerging Translator Mentorship Program. He holds a B.A. from Yale College, where he majored in English and studied fiction writing, journalism, and literary translation.
