I’m a widely published academic author who researches and writes in the fields of Catholic thought and culture, psychoanalytic theory, gender theory, and art history. In 2020, I left my post as Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Roehampton in London to work independently.

I continue to publish academic books and essays, but I’m focusing more on fiction and creative writing now. I’ve published two novels independently through Troubador—The Good Priest and Between Two Rivers—which have been well-reviewed. My third novel, Maggie Jackson’s Odyssey, is independently published through my imprint, Christabel Press, release date 16th October,  2026. I’m a regular contributor to the media, including BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day, and I publish occasional reflections on Substack.

I’ve lived a nomadic life, having been born and brought up in Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia), and also having lived in France, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. My husband Dave and I moved to Bristol with our four small children in 1988, and while working at Roehampton I lived on a houseboat in Twickenham, which was living the dream! We now divide our time between Camber near Rye on the South Coast of England, and Stirling in Scotland.

To celebrate the launch of Between Two Rivers, I invited three other writers from Zimbabwe to join me in a panel discussion about the challenges facing women writers around issues of race, gender, representation and identity. Here you can watch a fascinating literary discussion with Tina and Godess Bvukutwa, Chiedza Musengezi, and Kay Powell, with questions and observations from participants in the audience.
