Who Am I?
I am a blend of many things, both in ethnicity and in ideas. I have travelled and provided my family with entertainment on long journeys. I thrive on exploring new territories in writing, always challenging myself and diving into the next literary adventure. I write because it’s my passion. There’s something incredibly satisfying about shaping raw ideas into words that take on a life of their own. The thrill of creativity, especially when I’m deeply immersed in a moment, is empowering. For me, writing is about pushing boundaries, both with my ideas and myself.
My sense of humour? Friends say it’s a bit “naughty,” and I tend to agree. I’m always coming up with jokes, rhymes, and quirky sayings, and songs (Often lapsing into Country & Western style for NO apparent reason! I haven’t figured out why yet). I come up with at least one new story idea a week. Some turn into outlines, others sit on the back burner, waiting for me to decide if they’re worth pursuing or destined for the bin. They are all there, whispering to me, ‘Don’t forget me…’.
My Work?
I have a growing stack of manuscripts and outlines that I’m constantly tinkering with. I’ve also self-published books. Why? I needed to see if I could do it—to test my ability to write a novel, then another, and even dip my toes into children’s books. I’ve loved illustrating them. I use a mix of my own illustrations and digitally created art. I use Photoshop and other programs.
While my books are available on Amazon KDP, I’m now exploring the traditional publishing route, because I feel ready for that next step. Self-publishing taught me so much: how to format, how to sell myself, and how to keep going. Every lesson brings me closer to becoming the writer I aspire to be.
My Current Project?
Right now, I’m editing my YA fantasy novel set in Wales, where I am blending Irish mythology and folklore with alternate history but set in modern times. It is contemporary and relatable. Yes, there are mythical creatures, but it’s far from the typical trope fantasy story. It has multiple layers and depth, that I believe would translate beautifully to the screen one day. My goal is to have it query-ready by mid-2025. Fingers crossed for that!
Upcoming Project(s)?
I have several I am itching to get fully into. One is about a disproportionate view of disability and entitlement through the eyes of a veteran. Another is along the paranormal route where the character is not sure if they are being stalked by a dead person or if it is all fantasy. A family relationship novel is also on hold. It’s where tracing a family tree may not have the outcome you really want or need. That’s full of mystery and personal experiences. Don’t worry! It won’t be depressing. Another about being blind in a modern world. It’s a bit of a psychological thriller and romance. And not to bore you too much, there is another resting in my files where I have an older woman and younger man situation going on. A bit of a ‘Mrs Robinson’ scenario thrown into a coming of age novel. Tastefully done of course! Nothing vulgar or disagreeable! In fact it will have threads of awkwardness and humour. So that is a taste of things to come. No pun intended. There are many more but I will be writing a 10 page summary if I’m not careful.
My Agent Wishlist?
I’m looking for someone who believes in me and what I create. Simple as that. I want an agent who’s as flexible as I am, someone who’s as honest and loyal as I would be. I don’t just want a business relationship, I want a partner in this journey through the years to come.
Have I Been Published?
Yes! I had a poem published in a “Poetry Anthology” many years ago. It was one of those early vanity presses, which I didn’t realize at the time, but it still gave me a thrill. I even received a royalty cheque; a grand total of £1, received a year later, from the £9.99 I paid for my own copy! I kept it as a reminder of where I started, and how far I’ve come since then, and also, what to look out for. Lesson learned, but the excitement of seeing my work in print? That never fades even if it makes me cringe and giggle.
My Personal Background?
I’m partially educated. Let me explain that! I missed a lot of schooling during my parents travelling around the world. I lived in England, Wales, South Africa, Australia and for a short time, in New Zealand. I lived in 35 houses before I was 16. I went to a new school every 9.4 months. Each one was different from the last. Each one had a lasting impact on me. Each time I moved to a new one, I lost a bit of knowledge and confidence. I think I may have undiagnosed ADHD and I definitely have learning difficulties. But I use whatever resourses I can to assist me. I still use my Roget’s Thesaurus.
In my later years, after my two sons were in their teens, I went back to College in the U.K. and completed a 2 year course. Then went to University to study a Bachelor of Science degree. I have been a sausage packer in a meat factory, a Visa Clerk in the American Consulate in Australia, a Special Constable and a Midwife. I have a lot of worldly experience with people but treat them all the same. I even stood in line at Buckingham Palace with my husband after we were invited to a garden party there. That was an amazing experience and one of my lifetime highlights. I now have 3 grandchildren, who I write for. I married early and have been with my husband over 45 years. That’s all about me for now.
Where Do I See Myself Next Year?
Right here. Writing and creating. I am as addicted to writing. I can quit anytime… right after the next one, absolutely!
