Nature writer and Guardian Country Diarist, longstanding garden columnist, travel writer and author. Book reviewer for The Garden Design Journal

Author of Gardens of Northumberland and the Borders, 10 Principles of Artful Garden Design, and seven books on herbs. Contributor to Red 67 published by the British Trust for Ornithology, North Country: An anthology of landscape and nature.

Latest book Second Nature: The Story of a Naturalist’s Garden published by Saraband.

Writer for newspapers and magazines such as The English Garden (a 2-year series on making her garden), BBC Countryfile magazine, My Weekly magazine (columnist for 11 years) and The Northumbrian. Many articles are accompanied by Susie’s own photographs. She experiments with and then writes about naturalistic planting in her North Pennine wildlife garden which is featured in Clive Nichol’s Brilliant English Gardens and was filmed for BBC Gardeners’ World. Designer of two gardens at historic Swedish houses. 

Susie’s travel features have appeared in the Guardian, whilst articles on heritage skills, northern landscapes and artists are in BBC Countryfile magazine. Radio work has included a nature walk for Radio 4’s Today programme
