Sophie is a Bristol-based poet, artist, copywriter and marketing and communications professional for international education charities specialising in courses for young people with special, educational needs and disabilities. 

Sophie’s work has been published widely, such as in The Rialto, Magma, The Moth, Banshee, Under the Radar, Propel Magazine, Neon, Ink Sweat and Tears, The Interpreter’s House, Anthropocene, Steel Jackdaw, The Great Margin, Horses of a Different Colour by Dempsey and Windle and has been broadcasted on BBC Radio Bristol and featured on AiDu.TV. In 2019, Sophie won Bristol’s Hammer & Tongue Poetry Slam.

Sophie won the Brian Dempsey Memorial Prize 2021 for best single poem and was awarded second place in the Black Eyes Publishing and Gloucestershire Poetry Society Competition 2021. In 2022, Sophie was awarded third place in Magma’s Poetry Competition and had three poems published in Magma’s issue 83, Solitude.

Sophie’s poetry has been shortlisted for the Fish Poetry Prize 2021, the SaveAs Writers’ International Writing Competition, twice for the Bridport Prize and has been nominated for the Forward Prize.

Sophie holds a first-class degree in English from Exeter University and in 2018 she completed a Creative Writing MA with Distinction from Bath Spa University, supervised by Tim Liardet.

Sophie is experienced in the role of writer-in-residence. In 2018, she was appointed poet-in-residence on Bristol Harbour by Boat Poets and toured her work in Bristol’s Arnolfini, Plymouth’s Barbican and London’s Southbank Centre.

From 2015-2020, Sophie was writer-in-residence and voice artist for Riptide, an immersive theatre company in Leeds. She wrote three productions, including an app-based experience using GPS satellite navigation, consisting of a 360° binaural sound walk along the river Aire.

In 2021, Sophie was awarded a place on the Genesis Jewish Book Week Emerging Writers’ Programme, on which she was mentored by George Szirtes. As a workshop facilitator, Sophie has worked with Grimm & Co. in Rotherham, Literature Works, Thames Festival Trust, Paper Nations and has been commissioned by Bath Spa University twice to deliver primary school workshops as part of FUTURES Festival of Discovery.

Sophie co-runs Satellite of Love – a monthly poetry night aboard a lightship in Bristol’s harbour.
