For more than three decades, I was a history lecturer (and eventually a professor). My main specialisms were European history and histories of marginalized and minority peoples. I began by teaching French history and ended by teaching Israel/Palestine. I wrote eight monographs and about a hundred academic articles. My most successful academic work was The Hippy Trail: A History (published in 2017).
Since retirement, I have turned to creative writing. I have written a novel: The Displaced (2024). It’s about a young couple who volunteer to work with refugees in Germany in 1945. I’ve also published 24 short stories, 9 flash fictions, three poems and a one-act play.
I read French well, and have a rather more limited ability to read Spanish.
