My background

I trained as an editor at Penguin Books in the late 1990s and continued on to Weidenfeld & Nicolson, then Doubleday as senior commissioning editor with a focus on translations. In 2004, I moved to Amsterdam and worked at various Dutch publishing houses while also starting out as a translator.

Translation

I’ve translated around fifty books from mainly Dutch but sometimes French, and I’ve won the Vondel Translation Prize and shared the International Booker Prize with Lucas Rijneveld for The Discomfort of Evening. My books have been nominated for various other prizes such as the Oxford Weidenfeld Prize and the Dublin Literary Award.

Writing

I co-authored the successful parenting book The Happiest Kids In The World which was translated into 14 languages, and the poetry pamphlet The North Wind (Rack Press). 

Other activities

I mentor early career translators and give workshops on translation, editing and publishing. I also coach early career writers. I enjoy interviewing writers and translators and presenting events.
