Professional organisations

I am a Fellow of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), Associazione Italiana Traduttori e Interpreti (AITI), Translators’ Association (Society of Authors (SoA)) and Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET).

Academic and work history

Thirty plus years of experience in the translation industry with a solid background in technical, scientific and institutional translations. Two BAs, one in Biology and the other in Combined Studies (Literature and History of Ideas).

I grew up in the UK and learned Italian and Spanish through a six-year stay in Italy followed by two years in Venezuela. I have been living in Portugal since 2023.

After a couple of years working for the health service in the UK and as an EFL teacher in Rome, I started my translation career in Turin, Italy working for Fiat and Iveco group companies as an in-house translator.

Back in the UK, I gained a translation certification through the CIOL, became a founder member of the ITI and set up a successful business, first as a freelance translator and later as a limited company. After Brexit, I transferred my business to the EU, trading as Juliet Haydock Translations OÜ.

Initially I worked for Fiat and Iveco group companies in the UK (translating several million words) and then expanded into medical/pharmaceutical fields, specialising in drug regulatory affairs, clinical trials, quality assurance and laboratory SOPs.

I have held a series of contracts with the European Commission and Translation Centre for the Bodies of the EU, translating many thousands of pages for the European Institutions.

I currently hold translation contracts with the Training Centre of the International Labour Organization, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN and the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union.

I translate books in subjects as diverse as dentistry and science fiction. I have translated several books and publications through the Italian think tanks Fondazione ENI and ISPI.

Educational work includes 5 years as a part-time lecturer on the MA programme at Surrey University and 3 years as an external examiner for the translation course at Westminster University. I have mentored MA students at Cardiff University and have delivered a workshop for Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET) in Barcelona (Spain) and Brescia (Italy). I am a former Examiner for the Chartered Institute of Linguists Diploma exam. I’m currently organising the third edition of the Cardiff Translation Unconference with 3 colleagues.
