As a copywriter and creative director in the UK, I have used and abused the English language more than most.
My first published press ads were for Rochas Perfumes, my last grand re-brand was for the University of Bristol and along the way I helped to name Cadbury’s Heroes, the Nectar card and Atlas, the A400M military transport plane. I have written thousands of the right words in the right order for websites and blogs, TV and radio commercials, press ads and posters and corporate and brand videos. My scripts have been voiced by Alexei Sayle, Steve Coogan, John Peel and Susannah York, amongst others.
In my poetry, I enjoy playing with words and ideas – and I try to avoid cliché (oops, perhaps cliché itself). I like the way words look on the page as well as how they sound when read out loud. In my head, writing is drumming and music. My aim? Not a false beat or note from start to finish. I am the great nephew of the American, British-born, jazz pianist Sir George Shearing.
