I have written over 60 books for children including Bringing Down the Moon, The Clockwork Dragon and The Princess and the Pig.
I developed my skills as a writer and illustrator while studying and working as an architect but left architecture to become a children’s author in 1995.
My recent picture books include A Present for Rosy, illustrated by Polly Noakes and published by Walker Books, and The Book Family Robinson, illustrated by Sam Caldwell and published by Templar.
I have written two non-fiction picture books, The Plesiosaur’s Neck and The Tyrannosaur’s Feathers, in collaboration with palaeontologist Dr Adam S. Smith.
Most of my books are picture books, but I have also written chapter fiction and written and paper-engineered several novelty books including, Emergency Rescue and Alphabet Street.
My work has been translated into 36 different languages and has won several awards both in the UK and abroad including the Red House Children’s Book Award for Pigs Might Fly!, the Kiekeboekprijs for Bringing Down the Moon and the STEAM Children’s Book Prize for How the Borks Became: An Adventure in Evolution.
I was one of the first UK children’s authors to offer virtual school visits and have been virtually visiting schools all over the world since 2012. Inspired by similar websites in the US, in 2014 I set up Virtual Authors UK, a web directory of children’s authors, illustrators and poets who offer virtual visits to UK schools.
