I am a nature writer and soil scientist.  I have written for children but currently am engaged in nature writing for adults.  I have an MA in Nature & Travel Writing (Distinction) from Bath Spa University. I was short-listed for the Nan Shepherd Writing prize in 2021 and Highly Commended for the BBC Countryfile ‘New Nature Writer of the Year’ competition in 2022.  I am currently working on a book about soil for Bloomsbury’s British Wildlife Collection.  I am the Guardian Country Diary correspondent for Merseyside. I have had pieces published in magazines including Bird Watching, RSPB Magazine, and Simple Things.  My work has featured in a number of anthologies, the most recent being in ‘Under the Changing Skies: the best of the Guardian’s Country Diary, 2018-2024’.  My writing for children is always underpinned by my passion for the natural world.  My first book was ‘Rock on Barney’ followed by ‘The Adventures of Markus Moldewarp’.  I have a Middle Grade novel, ‘Zephyr’s Mountain’  in progress.  As a scientist I wrote many academic papers, but am a little relieved at leaving that behind.
