Known professionally as ‘The Muddy Archaeologist’, I am a passionate and engaging expert in the Ancient World as seen through the archaeology and also through the texts – the words written by the ancients themselves.
I specialise in adding colour and depth to our modern lives by digging deep into the past. All my work makes the ancient world relevant to us today.
For archaeology and ancient history is not about the dead. It’s about life, lived in a myriad ways in different times, and yet it’s also about our common humanity.
As a published historian, I also revel in sharing my expertise and passion in person at events nationally and internationally, on tours and on sites, but also online and in the media (both radio and tv).
I am always open to new ventures for new books and to partnerships enabling fresh presentations of the ancient world to those who don’t yet know they’re interested in our stunning ancient world.
My academically robust reach stretches from our earliest human origins, through prehistory and around the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and on up to the northern isles.
I lecture for York University and am delighted to be a member of the Society of Authors.
