Gemma Ross is an author, historian and storyteller whose work explores women, comedy, culture and heritage.

She is the co-author of The Carry On Girls, published by The History Press, a celebration of the actresses who helped shape one of Britain’s best-loved comedy franchises. A revised paperback edition will be published in October 2026.

Her next book, HERLARIOUS: Celebrating the Women of Comedy, will be published by The History Press in 2027. Spanning generations of performers, the book celebrates the pioneering, groundbreaking and much-loved women who have shaped comedy history and places their stories centre stage.

Gemma is also developing further non-fiction projects exploring Italian culture, heritage and ways of life.

Alongside her writing, Gemma is an experienced broadcaster, interviewer and public speaker. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and BBC Radio London, and has contributed to national press and media discussing women in comedy, film and popular culture. She has also contributed audio commentaries to British comedy film releases and regularly appears at festivals, screenings and cultural events.

Her live work has included interviewing leading figures from British comedy and appearing on panels and in conversations celebrating the history of film, television and entertainment.

Gemma is also the founder of Ross Literary & Media, an author management and media consultancy representing and developing selected writers, performers and creative projects.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Gemma worked in education for nearly twenty years in the UK and internationally. Her background in literature, teaching and research continues to inform her accessible approach to social and cultural history.
