I am an Award -Winning, Self-Published Author from Islington.
On the 7th of February, I won my first children’s book award with The Golden Wizard Prize the review which is available on Goodreads.
I launched my first book on the 30th of October 2022, called ” How Do You Get A Baby?”
A chapter book for children ages 5-8 years old, This is the first title in this series in “The Adventures of Canary Ryland”.
Canary Ryland is a 6-year-old girl who goes on a journey to find out where babies come from. She questions all of her friends which all in turn give her an amusing answer.
Canary and her friends then descend into a magical upside-down world called Destonia where they continue to look for the answer to the question.
Whilst in Destonia they meet the royal twin’s princess Sophillia and Prince Seth, the Royal advisor Buddy Bee and the people of Destonia oh and I can’t forget the scary and smelly Snoockapuss!!
The book ends where Canary presents the question to her parents to where they ask her where she thinks babies come from. I’ve also left a space where children and parents can explore the question for themselves.
This wonderfully illustrated book is colourful, has a huge gatefold, is interactive and allows children to use their imagination. Lots of thought has gone into ensuring the book is also Dyslexic friendly.
I wanted to write a story that could ease tricky topics with Parents and Children.
The book uses clever humour that allows parents to teach children with confidence using their own words. This book is not educational, it’s a conversation around the subject of babies.
My book is very inclusive 4 out of the 9 main characters in my book are either neurodivergent or have a physical disability for example I have a character who has phocomelia syndrome which means she has part of her limb missing, I have a character that wears a cochlear hearing aid, a character who is epileptic and a character who has Aspergers. I also have a character who is a wheelchair user. I have written another 27 books which are spin-offs from the characters of the book.
My book is dyslexic-friendly. As a person with Dyslexia myself I have ensured the book is written and colours are placed in a way that enables Dyslexic children to read with ease, I have proved that by Exhibiting last year’s Dyslexic festival.
In my books, I focus more on representing children with all abilities and allowing them to recognise themselves through my characters.
I have exhibited at festivals and markets and I recently did a podcast interview called Actors Who Pivot.
I was also featured at the BBC Television Centre last year’s World Book Day.
I was interviewed by the British Blacklist you can read the interview attached below,
I was interviewed by The Black Book Show Podcast.
My book is available through my website and Amazon Kindle.
