Angharad Hampshire is a journalist and academic who has worked as a radio producer for BBC Radio 4 and the World Service in London, honorary lecturer in journalism at the University of Hong Kong, and regular contributor to the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. She holds a Doctor of Arts in creative writing from the University of Sydney.

Her debut novel, The Mare, was described as “extraordinarily powerful” in The Times. It is based on the true story of brutal female concentration camp guard Hermine Braunsteiner, who was the first person to be extradited from America for Nazi war crimes. Hermine hid her identity from her American husband Russell Ryan. When Hermine was exposed by a Nazi hunter, Russell could not believe it was her. How did an ordinary woman descend so quickly into evil? Why did Russell choose to stand by her, despite discovering everything she had done?

Angharad currently works as a research fellow at York St John University on a project run by writing development agency for the North of England, New Writing North, and teaches on the Creative Writing MA.

The Mare is her first novel. She is about to start her second.
