I am the author of six novels – The J-Word (2009), The Slave (2013), Love (2015), The Unknown Mrs Rosen (2020), On Romford Road (2025) and Bella’s Wish (2026).
I have also written more than forty travel books and guidebooks for major UK and US travel publishers, and am co-author or contributor to many others. I am no longer taking work as a travel writer, other than to update my own titles.
The J-Word: My first novel, about an elderly secular Jew who (with his young grandson) seeks to exact justice after being beaten up by antisemitic thugs, was published by Snowbooks in 2009. It featured at Jewish Book Week and at Hampstead & Highgate Literary Festival, was made into an audiobook and, among other things, became a set book on a course at Lund University in Sweden. In 2018 it was published under my own imprint, Focus Books. www.andrewsanger.com/the-j-word
The Slave: This story tackles the subject of law, trafficking and the sex industry with a young loner attempting to free a woman from forced prostitution in a quiet London suburb. This book featured at Hampstead & Highgate Literary Festival. www.andrewsanger.com/the-slave
Love: Written in a vivid, unrestrained style, Love captures the spirit of an era as well as telling a story of illusion, disillusion and entwined relationships. Two young hippies, Angela and Simon, quit California and journey to India in search of Angela’s former lover. Nothing turns out as they had hoped. www.andrewsanger.com/love
The Unknown Mrs Rosen: While her family bicker over the cost of her care an elderly widow relives a life of espionage, betrayal and violence about which they know nothing. www.andrewsanger.com/the-unknown-mrs-rosen
On Romford Road: A pub brawl one night in 1915 spins into a century-long feud between two tough-minded East London families as they climb from poverty to prosperity, unable to escape a destiny that binds them together. The story is told in four parts, for four generations of women, Harriet, Maud, Elizabeth and Alex. Published in 2025. www.andrewsanger.com/on-romford-road
Bella’s Wish: When 78-year-old Bella disappears without trace from her remote home in the Languedoc back country of southern France, her oldest friend begins a search that uncovers more than he ever knew or suspected about Bella. The characters appeared in Love, when they were young and carefree. A whole lifetime has passed. www.andrewsanger.com/bellas-wish
