After more than twenty-five years as a successful freelance journalist with the UK national press, I am now spending more time on book-writing.
I am the author of a number of books on the English landscape and the outdoors, including The Borders: The Lands We Share, published in early 2025. Previous books include Back Roads through Middle England (following the ‘Cotswold’ oolite limestone from Dorset to the Humber) and Backbone of England (human interaction with Pennine upland landscapes).
Also with a strong outdoor theme, but fiction rather than non-fiction, are the three crime novels in my Lakeland Fells trilogy, The Bad Step, In the Cold of the Night and Too Hot for Comfort.
I have also written two books on co-operative history, the most recent being These Houses Are Ours: Co-operative and community-led housing alternatives 1870-1919.
