Writers of Essex: Setting
6 September @ 12:00 - 14:00 BST

Join Writers of Essex on Saturday 6 September from 12pm online for an interactive session with Maggie Freeman on the importance of developing settings in your work. We’re all influenced by where we find ourselves and who we are with. So what’s more natural than that the same should be true of our characters when we’re writing?
Maggie writes mainly historical fiction and poetry. She taught Creative Writing, Writing your Memories and Writing your Novel in Community Education in Chelmsford, Maldon, Brentwood and Witham for many years. Her most recent novel, The Wives of King Canute, was published last year. She is currently working on a novella.
During this talk we will look at:
- How we can get ideas for stories from different places, and different times
- Developing characters from setting
- Using settings to help convey character
- Setting as a tool in pace and structureÂ
We’ll be doing some exercises to help you develop your stories, so you may find pen and paper useful.
