West Midlands Group x Fellows: Lindsey Davis
9 May @ 13:30 - 15:30 BST
Free
Join the West Midlands Group for an interactive session with SoA Fellow Lindsey Davis on Friday 9 May from 1.30pm. The session will consist of a talk from Lindsey on all things writing plus an extensive Q&A. Come along ready to ask questions and benefit from Lindsey’s wealth of experience!
Lindsey is an historical novelist who has written twenty novels in her historical crime series, Falco, set in ancient Rome. She has served as Chair of the SoA Management Committee and the UK Crimewriters’ Association, and served as Honorary President of the Classical Association. In 2011 she was awarded the Crimewriters’ Association Diamond Dagger Award for lifetime achievement and in 2013 was the winner of the Barcelona Historical Novel Prize.
Covered in this session:
- Starting out as a writer and experiences with publishers
- A curious experience changing agents
- The good, the bad and the ugly of film and TV options
- Adaptations for large print, foreign editions, audio, and ebooks
- Festivals, bookshop and speaking events (Lindsey was at one time Century’s ‘most toured author’)
- Writing a Quickread and a companion book to the Falco series
- Author quotes on books
- Reluctant social media use and connecting online
- Leading Falco and Albia book tours
Lindsey began her writing life on the Enterprise Allowance Scheme so has always viewed writing as a job. She famously meets her deadlines, reads her contracts, has never employed an accountant, and is the only person who knows, from her own spreadsheet, just how many English language books she has sold. Her business plan is to write to age 83. She absolutely does not believe airy fairy nonsense like ‘my books are my children’, let alone, ‘I just want to be published, I don’t care about the money’.
After the talk as above, there will be a Q&A, as much as you want. Lindsey is coming to Digbeth to tell you what she knows (or thinks she does) and if possible help answer what you want to know.
We will meet in the Meeting Room at the Old Library, Zellig, Gibb Street, Digbeth, Birmingham, B9 4AT.
Don’t worry if you haven’t been to a meet-up before – all members welcome.
