Join us for an in-person event hosted by our Translators Association (TA). Catch up with fellow members, chat with the SoA staff team, and hear from our special guest, translator Ruth Martin. Ruth will share her insights on how to talk about translations to different audiences such as podcasts, radio interviews or giving a talk in a bookshop.

Programme
- 6pm – Event starts
- 6.30pm – Welcome and introductions from TA Chair, Ian Giles, followed by a short talk from Ruth Martin and the opportunity to ask questions [20 minutes]

The Line-up
Ruth Martin
Ruth Martin studied English literature before gaining a PhD in German. She has been translating fiction and non-fiction books since 2010, by authors ranging from Joseph Roth and Hannah Arendt to Volker Weidermann and Shida Bazyar. Together with Charlotte Collins, she won the 2020 Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, for Nino Haratischwili’s epic novel The Eighth Life. Ruth has taught at the University of Kent and the Bristol Translates summer school. She is a former co-chair of the Translators Association.
Her translation of Shida Bazyar’s The Nights are Quiet in Tehran was shortlisted for the 2026 International Booker Prize.

About the Translators Association (TA)
The Translators Association (TA) provides a source of expert advice for individual literary translators and is also a collective voice representing the profession as a whole. Translators automatically become a member of the TA on joining the SoA.
The TA is run by a committee of 8 members and coordinated by Catherine Fuller and Ambre Morvan. Catherine and Ambre are also members of the SoA Contracts Advisory team
