Surrey Group: Writing Characters With Disabilities

9 June @ 12:00 - 14:00 BST

Free

Join the Surrey Group on Tuesday 9 June from 12pm to hear from children’s authors Alex Strick and Ally Sherrick in a discussion of the challenges and rewards of researching and writing fiction for young people featuring protagonists with disabilities.

Questions they’ll tackle include how to make your characters authentic, how to avoid common pitfalls and tropes, and what success might look like.

Using her middle-grade novel The Queen’s Fool, Ally will explore how to approach portraying a character with a learning disability in history. Alex will share the latest news about Reflecting Disability, an Arts Council funded study into the representation of people with disabilities in children’s literature of which she’s a co-facilitator with friend and colleague, Beth Cox.

We’ll meet at The Seahorse, 52-54 The Street, Shalford, Guildford, GU4 8BU.

All writerly and bookish guests welcome!
