SoA in Person | Dramaturgs’ Network, Society of Authors, and Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre networking event

21 November @ 18:00 - 21:00 GMT

Free

The Dramaturgs’ Network, the Society of Authors and the Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre are bringing together 60 writers, dramaturgs and theatre-makers on Friday 21 November for the second annual networking event. This is a chance for 20 members from each organisation to meet, get to know each other, talk about their work and find new collaborators.

This event is open to all dramaturgs with different experiences and at various stages in their careers and we hope it will attract a wide range of participants.

In the first half of the evening, participants will have a chance to introduce themselves in pairs and small groups. In the second half, everyone will have the opportunity to chat casually and discuss anything that sparked their interest in the first half.

The Line-up

Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre

Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre is a space in which theatre makers, critics and audiences gather to share knowledge, ideas and practices relating to contemporary theatre and performance.  We host an extensive programme of public events including workshops, seminars, lectures, symposia and performances. Our events are led by the research interests of Centre members and the current concerns of its Fellows and visiting artists. Our research falls into the following main strands: culture, community and identity; socially engaged practices; digital practices and culture; new writing and dramaturgy; making contemporary theatre; contemporary approaches to historical works. Through our work, theatre makers, writers, scholars and critics make use of the resources available in our Arts building at 43 Gordon Square. The Centre’s work is also closely associated with Birkbeck’s BA, MA and PhD programmes in Theatre and Drama Studies, Directing, Dramaturgy, and Creative Writing.

Dramaturgs’ Network

The Dramaturgs’ Network is a volunteer-led organisation, working to explore and expand the theory and practice of dramaturgy in the UK and advocate for dramaturgs in the wider sector. We aim to bring dramaturgs together, from different parts of the UK and the world, to share experiences and working methods – to tackle the pressing issues of the day and their interrogation through live arts. Our members are both seasoned professionals and people at the very start of their dramaturgy careers. They work in theatre, dance, cabaret, live arts and many more forms; they’re freelance dramaturgs, literary managers, academics, theatre makers, directors and writers. We also founded the Kenneth Tynan Award, given to a dramaturg whose work has forged new ground in the UK.

Scriptwriters Group

The Scriptwriters Group (SWG) is a community of scriptwriters and broadcasters, a special-interest group of the Society of Authors’ membership. It represents writers and makers across digital, broadcast, AV and theatre. We support members and associates by providing professional, individual advice, negotiating collective minimum terms agreements with organisations such the BBC, and lobby on policy and legislation to promote the interests and protect the rights of scriptwriters.
