North East Group: Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction

13 September @ 11:00 - 13:00 BST

Free

Join the North East Group on Saturday 13 September at 11am (doors from 10.40am), to hear from Max Adams, Lecturer in Creative Writing at Newcastle University, about the crossover between fiction and creative non-fiction.

Max Adams was previously a professional archaeologist, before taking up careers as a woodsman, traveller and writer. His biographies of Admiral Collingwood (2005) and John Martin (The Firebringers, 2009) – a Guardian Book of the Week – were followed by critically-acclaimed works on the Dark Ages (The King in the North, In the Land of Giants, Ælfred’s Britain, The First Kingdom and The Mercian Chronicles). His Wisdom of Trees (2014), Trees of Life (2019) and The Museum of the Wood Age (2022) are all celebrations of humans’ rich relations with trees and woods. His debut novel, The Ambulist, was published in 2016.

He was a Royal Literary Fund Fellow in the Department of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University from 2010-2012 and later an RLF Consultant Fellow. He is a Churchill Fellow and a Visiting Fellow in the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. His current projects include a new Early Medieval history of Northumbria, and Domesday Walking, an account of recent through the landscapes of the Norman Conquest.

We will meet at the Lit and Phil Library, 23 Westgate Road (next to Bolbec Hall), Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1SE. It’s less than one minute from Newcastle Central Rail Station and the Central Station Metro. Turn right and walk for less than a minute. On the corner of Westgate Road, Orchard Street/Neville Street, next to Neville Hall.

We look forward to seeing members at the event.
