Grab a cuppa and get to know English classicist and SoA Fellow, Mary Beard. Mary will be in conversation with Senior Publishing Contracts Advisor at the SoA, Theo Jones to discuss her work and career and to offer a glimpse into her creative routine.

As of Feb 2025, our #SoAatHome How I Write- in conversation events will be free for all but with a donation option when registering for the event. All donations made go towards the Society of Authors’ Access Fund. The fund is to help provide authors support for travel, subsistence, childcare or access needs for events, residencies, and retreats. If you would like to donate with your booking, please do so when registering for the event below.
Programme
- Welcome and housekeeping from Theo Jones (3 mins)
- Introduction to Mary Beard and a glimpse into her creative routine (15-25 mins)
- Mary will do a short reading from her book Emperor of Rome (2-3 mins)
- Q&A with audience (10-15 mins)
- Summary and closing comments (3 mins)

One of the world’s best-known Classicists, Mary Beard has written numerous books including the prize-winning Pompeii, the best-selling SPQR and the thought-provoking Women & Power. Mary is a regular media commentator, committed blogger and has made many highly-acclaimed television documentaries on the Ancient world. Her latest book, Roman Emperor, delves into the world of that extraordinary role.

Theo Jones
Theo is a Senior Contracts Advisor at the Society of Authors with a particular interest in supporting members working across TV, film and stage. He co-presents and co-produces the SoA’s Advisory Clinic podcast which looks at the key topics, issues and challenges affecting authors today.
