My working life was spent mostly in the not-for-profit sector, starting as an academic, moving on to community work, then being CEO of a number of charities combatting poverty or social exclusion. Most of my leisure time was spent pursuing my interest in nature and wildlife. Traveled around the world watching birds and enjoying nature.
I have always written, starting out as a young man writing poetry, none of which I ever attempted to publish. And I have written several novels, which again I never attempted to publish. Latterly, my hobby led me to writing about the history of science, and very specifically, those people after whom Vertebrate Taxa have been named.
My only other published work is a book of anecdotes of my travels.
I have written a magazine column for the last twenty plus years – in Birdwatching magazine… as the Grumpy Old Birder
