I have spent over two decades (how did that happen?) dealing with the question of what “bridging meaning between languages” actually entails. I’ve worked for bilingual magazines focusing on cultural journalism and short fiction (Label), architecture (Domus), and more; I’ve translated for publishing houses Hoepli (X Milano) and Macro Edizioni; I worked with independent authors, I’ve translated poetry, I’ve thought about translation in all of its forms, and it turns out Umberto Eco was right when he said that “translation is the act of re-creation”. The truth is that translation and its many compromises will always result in some loss (is it the rounded sound of a word? Its musical rhythm? Its untransferable cultural nuances?), but we never stop trying to transfer as much of the spirit of a text across. This exercise of “transforming everything so that nothing changes”, as Gunther Grass said, is what I love to do.
