Hello, I’m Emily. Welcome to my profile and thank you for your interest in my work!

I’m a translator working from French and Spanish into English and I have experience in translating a wide range of genres, but I have a keen interest in literary, queer and feminist translation. In 2024 I was a commended entrant for my translation and commentary of ’Mestiza soy’ by Beatriz Alejandra Arboleda in the Open Category of the Stephen Spender Prize for poetry in translation.

I have an MSc in Interpreting and Translating from Heriot-Watt University as well as a BA in Modern Languages (French and Spanish) from the University of Surrey, and I particularly enjoy undertaking translations that allow me to strive for social justice and give visibility to underrepresented communities and voices. My lived experience as a queer woman of mixed White British and Black Caribbean heritage inspires me to use translation as a means of raising awareness of intersectional lived experiences to promote constructive conversations and encourage progress.

My master’s dissertation was a translation and commentary of selected stories from a Dominican flash fiction collection and focused on a feminist translation of taboo topics whereby I actively challenged patriarchal biases embedded in language. My project was recognised for offering credible new insight into interventionist approaches and I was delighted that my translation was deemed to be of “professional quality.”

As well as translation I write poetry and am an avid reader.
