Funding Week | Industry Insider – Applying for funding for scripted work

SoA Scriptwriters committee member, James Clarke, offers a talk and the opportunity for a conversation about the key kinds of issues to think through when applying for public funding support for a film screenplay project in terms of both short and feature length projects.

Between the 19-21 May 2025, we are running a series of #SoAatHome events focusing on funding opportunities for writers in the UK.

#SoAatHome Industry Insider events – free for all + donation
Our #SoAatHome industry insider events are free for all, but you can choose to make a donation to the Society of Authors’ Access Fund when registering for the event. The fund helps to provide authors with support for travel, subsistence, childcare or access needs for events, residencies, and retreats. Who is this session for?
The session is for screenwriters looking to develop their scripts from the earliest point of an idea and also for writers who may have a collaboration in process with a director / producer team.
What will this session cover?
- Where to access public funding for film script development
- What to think about in terms of proposing short film and feature film projects
- How to think through the question of ‘Why’ you want to develop a given project
- The kinds of particular questions / considerations to be engaged with in terms of a given story and its development context.

The Line-up
James Clarke
James Clarke has written and produced a number of short film projects. He has been longlisted in the BAFTA Best Short Film category. He is currently developing several scripts. James has been a Script Reader for the BFI and taught at London Film School. He currently contributes to the MA Feature Film Development course at Birmingham City University.
