Martin was the SoA's Head of Communications from 2016 to 2024.
The past couple of years have seen unprecedented change and challenge for the Society of Authors.

We campaigned harder than ever as you faced ever greater challenges to make a living from your work.

We reached more authors of all kinds, in more places, through our events, groups and networks.

We continue to offer expert, tailored, individual advice to members across a huge range of enquiries.

We reinvented ourselves in the health crisis to ensure not only business as usual, but to transform what we do, to make sure we’re reaching further in this unprecedented time, and raised and distributed nearly £1 million as part of the Authors’ Emergency Fund to authors affected by the crisis.

We are developing a new organisational strategy which puts inclusivity front and centre.

And each month, our membership levels continue to rise to new record levels.

We need your help for what comes next

Each year, four new places* become available on our democratically elected Management Committee. That’s where you come in. We are inviting nominations to fill them now (deadline: 15 July 2020).

If you have ideas that could help make the SoA a stronger advocate for all types of authors, at every career stage, we want to hear from you.

We are committed to being an inclusive and diverse organisation. We are looking for enthusiastic, imaginative and practical people to join our Management Committee, regardless of background or specialism, as Ferdinand Dennis, David Donachie, Mary Hoffman and Philip Womack complete their three-year terms.

We are particularly keen to receive nominations from authors with backgrounds, experiences and skills currently underrepresented on the Committee.

Join Joanne Harris (Chair), Simon Cann, Samantha Collett, Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin, Abie Longstaff, Woodrow Phoenix, Katharine Quarmby and Hugh Roberts, to help guide us through the next few years.

* membership of the Management Committee is a voluntary role, but all expenses are covered and remote attendance is enabled to ensure you can take part regardless of location or circumstances. Any Full Member (not Associate Member) is eligible.
