The SoA is pleased at the news that the All Party Parliamentary Group on Publishing is launching an investigation into how best to reap the benefits of the UK’s strong publishing industry. However, it is essential that the role of authors is not overlooked.

The announcement follows the publication of the Government’s White Paper on Culture, which made welcome reference to the importance of ‘soft power’ — represented by

our strong and stable democracy, our belief in individual liberty, our diversity and our freedom of expression.

This power is created by culture, and driven by creators.

The role of authors in creating and maintaining this success must not be overlooked, and the Government should take authors’ needs into account to ensure this success continues.

There are issues with fair taxation, contracts and copyright law that must be addressed if we are to properly support creators. If they are not, any success will be unsustainable.

The SoA is currently speaking to the Publishers Association and our Chief Executive, Nicola Solomon, has been invited to the All Party Working Group meeting on the topic. Her first suggestion to the Group was that they address the lack of any author in the consultation, to ensure their views and expertise are harnessed.
