Last Thursday (23 April), SoA members and staff visited Shelter from the Storm – London’s free homeless shelter – to share stories and to hand out books for World Book Night.
The team, which included Alison Baverstock (member of the SoA Management Committee) and the author Sarah Wise, handed out books to 45 guests of the London homeless shelter.
Over the course of the evening, the SoA team chatted to guests and discussed the value and nourishment that reading can offer. Alison Baverstock spoke of her reading journey:
Throughout my life, reading has been the hugely important to me – and I truly believe life is consistently better with a book. Whatever has happened to me – everyday routines, significant events, change or problems – I have found joy, wisdom, consolation and courage in books.
Shelter from the Storm relies entirely on generous donations to survive. It is not affiliated to any other organisation and depends on volunteers in the local community.
All donations are used purely to keep offering services to those who need them. It costs £10 per guest per day to provide a warm bed, breakfast, a hot evening meal, showers and a wide range of services. Please donate, if you can, to help keep this shelter open.
