The SoA is delighted that restrictions on sending books to prisoners have been lifted.

The revision of the Incentives and Earned Privileges Scheme (IEPS) means that families and friends are now able to send books to prisoners in England and Wales. The easing of the restrictions follows the High Court ruling in December, where the government’s ban was judged unlawful. You can read the annex detailing the conditions of sending and handing books to prisoners online here.

Our Chief Executive, Nicola Solomon, welcomed the news:

This is a happy ending to a hard fought campaign. Many organisations and individuals have stood up and spoken out against the senseless and harmful restriction of access to literature and it is wonderful to see that passion and what it can achieve.
