I have 18 years teaching experience. I specialized in art, drama and English as a Second Language. I have also worked as a Learning Support Teacher with children with special needs, and children who needed additional language support. The idea for the creation of my first book, The Story Maker, came from my own observations of young children struggling to write stories and find new words to enrich their individual expression. I created this book with the help of Kirstin Lewis, a literacy consultant.
My second book, The Story Maker Motivator, is a stimulating creative writing and thinking resource book for secondary school students, developed from the primary resource The Story Maker.
The Giant from Nowhere published 2019 by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This story was originally created from a 6 week project with primary school children 5 - 8 years of age. The story promotes interactive participation, whether it is used in a classroom or on a one to one basis. Key points:
Develops social awareness as the reader and the child can become directly involved in the problems The Giant and the villagers face.
Explores similarities and differences between people and habitats.
The reader and the child are encouraged to help The Giant and the villagers and depending upon an individual child's needs this can be achieved either through drawing or writing, therefore extending narrative skills.
There are beautifully drawn examples of advertisements, questionnaires, letters, invitations and other resources all available to download. These activities develop communication on many different levels and help extend language skills and vocabulary.
The story will have taken the reader and the child on a journey with a Giant and the villagers of Somewhere, a journey that will end in a wonderful celebration of love and mutual respect.
