My Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stages 3 & 4 with Handy Usage Notes is now out. It’s packed with authentic, sometimes unintentionally hilarious, examples of common grammatical and punctuation lapses to illustrate the points made. These examples, which aim to bring the content to life and to make the subject engaging and easily accessible, have been culled from a variety of high-profile sources.
I am a linguist/grammarian, author/blogger and copy editor completely besotted with the glorious English language and its fascinating grammar! Decades of serious scholarship and linguistic research have, I believe, equipped me with an outstanding knowledge of the rules underpinning effective written communication, including those of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
My considerable writing flair and linguistic expertise have enabled me to pen several books on grammar and punctuation, two of them offering a humorous take on common linguistic lapses. My latest opus, Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stages 3 & 4 with Handy Usage Notes, tries to make grammar and punctuation accessible to, and engaging for, not only secondary-school pupils but also older readers.
My main areas of interest are:
- Writing about, and training in, the principles of English grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Writing about, and training in, the conventions of good English
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language
- Writing irreverent political satire
- Providing critiques of grammar, spelling, punctuation and style of others’ writing
- Copy editing both fiction and non-fiction texts
An Amazon review of my grammar
This is just a brilliant reference book. It's clearly structured and relevant to today's students. The pages are invitingly set out. The author is charmingly and unapologetically didactic about usage and terminology and bangs home her points with convincing examples from a range of sources. Most entertaining of these, in my view, are the examples from OFSTED reports, where Ms Nolan offers corrections to a number of errors. The book is aimed at teachers but, of course, pupils, students and parents will benefit from having such a clever and comprehensive coverage of the subject available to them. I offer, in proof of this, the fact that I have bought a copy for my grand-daughter as she embarks on her secondary-school career. This book is so not-old-fashioned, so easy to consult. I wish I'd had a copy when I was teaching English.
