SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Feeling rejected? Rejections and how to deal with them!
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday 20 August from 2pm. \nFeeling rejected? Rejections and how to deal with them! \nAfter 30 rejections\, Stephen King threw his novel Carrie into the “trash” assuming it was useless. John Grisham’s A Time to Kill was also rejected 20 times. T.S. Eliot rejected Orwell’s Animal Farm because he did not agree with its political stance. Lord of the Flies was considered “rubbish and dull”. John le Carre’s first book\, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold\, was rejected on the basis that “it didn’t have any future”… ahem! \nThese novels are classics and bestsellers in their genre\, so how do we deal with our own rejections? Each one of us could have written the next classic\, but how many classics have gone unpublished? Join us to discuss how we deal with rejection\, from soldiering on\, asking for clarification and dealing with how it feels. \nThese and other questions are up for discussion. Bring your favourite rejections and be ready to resend! \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX. There is a large\, free car park\, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. The meeting room is immediately to your left on entering\, with toilets opposite. The café to the right serves a great selection of non-alcoholic refreshments\, delicious cake etc. \nIf you have accessibility issues\, keep driving: there are two disabled spaces just to the left of the doorway. While the café is generously offering us the meeting room free of charge\, please bring a plastic card or cash to pay for your own refreshments. \nLocal group meet-ups are free to attend. To join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people to expect. We are currently experiencing some issues with our RSVP forms. If the RSVP form does not work\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org to register for the meeting.

SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Publish and be...
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday\, 25 June from 2pm \nPublish and be…. \nThis month\, we will be revisiting the subject of self-publication\, the traps and pitfalls\, the costs and the sales\, the hard work and the rewards. \nWe will look at all the advice that is offered to authors considering self-publishing. We will discuss the difference between self-publishing and vanity publishing and how to tell the difference when being approached by\, or when approaching\, possible publishers. \nWe will examine the process from notes to print\, from print to online\, from online to audio and all points in between. \nCan you (should you) do it all yourself? Should you be paying for professional support\, and is it worth it? What is hybrid publishing? Do some publishers who offer self-publishing support also act as gatekeepers? Should we go to print or to online only? What are the pitfalls when publishing online? \nCome ready to talk about your own experience\, with thoughts and knowledge of this increasingly popular opportunity to bypass the gatekeepers\, whether you’re new to the game or a bestseller looking for more control. \nIs it time to publish and possibly be damned?! \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX. There is a large\, free car park\, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Book Launches - What are they good for?
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday\, 28 May from 2pm. \nBook Launches: What are they good for? \nHave book launches gone out of fashion? \nWhat was good or bad about the launches you have been to? Did you enjoy them? Or did you feel pressured to buy the book because someone was giving you a free drink and a cucumber sandwich? \nShould a publisher be obliged to offer a book launch or more publicity? Authors are obliged to make efforts to publicise their book\, but not so much is required of publishers; should we challenge that? \nIf you held your own\, was it worth it to you and your book? \nThese and other questions are up for discussion. If you remember the golden age of book launches\, have been to a few recently\, or held your own. \nCome and discuss. \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX.
