DESCRIPTION:Join the Surrey Group on Tuesday 8 September from 12pm for their next meeting to hear from Max Gwynne\, Area Commercial Expert at Waterstones\, on the importance of booksellers and bookselling in the 21st century and beyond. \nThe talk will cover: \n\nThe current state of global reading and trends\, the situation of libraries and wider cultural funding cuts\, the rise of online alternatives to bookshops/libraries and the dangers. Bookshops/Booksellers roles in combating these issues.\nHow effective bookshops work. The critical role of great\, proactive service and a sharing of passions; seeking to further ingrain the love of books into our public culture and future generations.\nIntelligent recommendations and tailoring our suggestions wisely. SUMMARY:Surrey Group: The Dark Art of Editing
DESCRIPTION:Join the Surrey Group on Tuesday 14 July from 12pm to hear from editor\, ghostwriter and submission coach\, Rebecca Rennie on the dark art of editing. \nIn this condensed 30-minute session\, Rebecca will explore how an editor can transform your book. Rebecca will demonstrate some of the most common editorial pitfalls that can undermine your work and how editors change writers’ lives. \nRebecca works mostly\, but not exclusively\, with non-fiction\, memoir\, self-help and private family history books. She will use specific examples from a selection of books she has worked on from inception to publication: ‘The Many Faces of Crime: A True Detective’s Chronicle’ by Dennis McGookin\, ‘Around the World with Dr Nina Simone: The Drummer’s Tale’\, amongst others. \nFeel free to ask Rebecca any questions over lunch regarding her more extended talk on The Dark Art of Editing\, which includes: \n\nThe different types of editors and what they do\nThe ‘creative editor’ as writing partner and coach\n‘Showing’ versus ‘telling’ with practical examples\nCommon editorial pitfalls\, including overused words\, excessive adverbs and filler phrases\nClunky\, repetitive and inconsistent writing\nDashes (there are 3!)\, house styles\, consistency\, and why copy editors matter\nStructural issues that affect clarity\, pacing and reader engagement\nUseful resources\, publications and organisations for writers\n\nWe’ll meet at The Seahorse\, 52-54 The Street\, Shalford\, Guildford\, GU4 8BU. \nAll writerly and bookish guests welcome! \nTo attend the meeting\, click the Going button below and fill out the RSVP form.
