DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next online meet-up on Thursday 23 April from 2pm. \nIn this month’s meeting\, we’ll be having a Q&A with editor Katy Loftus\, discussing the publishing industry from an editor’s perspective. She’ll share advice on making the path from offer to publishing day as smooth as possible\, including looking at the kinds of accommodations editors make for their authors and how to navigate these. She spent 15 years working for the major UK publishers\, most recently for Viking at Penguin Random House\, where she curated a list of bestselling and award-winning books. In 2021\, her last year in-house\, she won Editor of the Year at the British Book Awards. She left shortly afterwards and wrote publicly about the impact of corporate publishing on mental health. In her time in London she also co-founded the Penguin WriteNow scheme and the Feminist Book Society literary salon. She writes advice for authors and articles about mental health on her Substack\, Katy Loftus on the Margins. ‍ \nAbout the Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network  \nThe Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses network is a member-led peer support network aims to break feelings of isolation by connecting authors facing common experiences\, in an online community that offers continuing professional and personal support. \nWe run monthly get-togethers using Zoom\, where you can chat informally online with others. Depending on your computer or device\, you can take part either using audio or video. Please let us know if you have any specific needs that will help you take part. \nOur primary aim is to offer a friendly and supportive space where you can feel safe to ask questions\, share experiences\, offer advice\, and make new connections. For more information\, visit our Network page here. \nOur online meet-ups are free to attend for ADCI Network members only. SUMMARY:Group Chat: What Stops You Asking for Access? - Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next online meet-up on Thursday 26 March from 2pm. \nDuring our March general chat session\, we are going to be discussing the issues and obstacles disabled authors face when asking for access requests. This follows on from the launch of our access document last year. You can find details and download it here: https://societyofauthors.org/groups/authors-disabilities-illnesses-network/ \nPlease find below the questions we’ll be considering. \nPositives: \n\nWhat have you done well in advocating for your access needs?\nWhat enabled you to advocate for yourself?\n\nBarriers: \n\nAt which stage do you find it hardest to ask for adjustments?\nWhat are the main barriers that hold you back from asking for reasonable adjustments?\n\nPracticalities: \n\nWhat adjustments have been particularly helpful?\nWhat adjustment would you like to ask for but haven’t yet?\n\nClosing reflection: \n\nWhat would enable you to feel more confident in asking for adjustments?\n\nThe session is a general chat\, so it won’t be recorded\, but we will email out anonymised notes on what we have discussed. If you are unable to attend the meeting\, please email your responses to disabledauthors@gmail.com or anything else you would like to add. \nThe information will be passed (anonymously) onto coaching psychologist Lisa Christie who is running a professional development session for us on Tuesday 2 June to help disabled\, chronically ill and neurodivergent authors to confidently make access requests. \nYou can sign up for that here: https://societyofauthors.org/event/professional-development-how-to-ask-for-what-you-need-gaining-confidence-to-speak-up-while-navigating-barriers-in-publishing/ \nAbout the Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network  \nThe Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses network is a member-led peer support network aims to break feelings of isolation by connecting authors facing common experiences\, in an online community that offers continuing professional and personal support. \nWe run monthly get-togethers using Zoom\, where you can chat informally online with others. SUMMARY:Navigating the Publishing Industry with Sunyi Dean - Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next online meet-up on Thursday 26 February from 2pm. \nIn this session\, Sunyi Dean from Publishing Rodeo Podcast will be talking to us about the publishing industry from an authors’ perspective and sharing her advice on how to navigate it. \nSunyi Dean (sun-yee deen) is a multi-award-losing author of speculative fiction. Though born in Texas and raised in Hong Kong\, she now resides in Northern England. Her debut novel\, The Book Eaters\, was an instant #2 Sunday Times Bestseller. In her spare time\, she likes buying whisky\, collecting dumbbells\, and dying in jiu-jitsu. She also founded the Hugo-nominated Publishing Rodeo Podcast with fellow Tor author\, Scott Drakeford. \nIn 2022\, two authors debuted in the same genre\, with the same publisher\, in the same year. Yet each of their books\, and subsequently each of their careers\, went in very different directions. That pattern repeats itself throughout the industry\, over and over. Why does this happen\, and what does it mean? Sunyi and Scott aim to answer those questions and many more\, using collated experiences from themselves\, friends\, colleagues\, and a slew of industry professionals in an attempt to deconstruct what makes or breaks a book\, along with how to build–and maintain!–an author career. \nAbout the Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network  \nThe Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses network is a member-led peer support network aims to break feelings of isolation by connecting authors facing common experiences\, in an online community that offers continuing professional and personal support. \nWe run monthly get-togethers using Zoom\, where you can chat informally online with others.
