SUMMARY:Brighton and Hove Group: Celebrating our Success
DESCRIPTION:Join the Brighton & Hove Group on Friday 16 October from 14:00 at The Regency Town House for a special meeting celebrating the successes\, milestones and good news in our writing lives. \nSeveral of our writers have some great news to share\, and we thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate those achievements together and hear the stories behind them. \nPerhaps you’ve: \n\nSecured a literary agent\nSigned a publishing deal\nGot a new book coming out\nFinished a new draft or major writing project\nLaunched a new website or writing venture\nReached a milestone you’re particularly proud of\nHad a breakthrough or received some encouraging news about your work\n\nWhatever your achievement\, big or small\, we’d love to hear about it. These are the stories that can inspire us\, encourage us and remind us that progress comes in many different forms. \nLet’s celebrate one another\, share what we’ve learned\, and cheer each other on. \nWe have two hours together\, so time will be limited. If you’d like to share a story or update with the group\, please email localgroups@societyofauthors.org as soon as possible to let us know. We’ll do our best to make sure everyone who wants to contribute has an opportunity to speak. \nWe’ll meet downstairs in The Regency Town House\, 13 Brunswick Square\, Hove\, BN3 1EH. Tea\, coffee and biscuits\, including gluten-free and dairy-free options\, will be provided by group organiser Rebecca for a donation of £3 via SumUp. \nThe Regency Town House is a charity and lets us meet here very cheaply\, so please make a donation as you leave if you’re in a position to do so. \nAll members welcome! \nTo attend the meeting\, click the Going button below and fill out the RSVP form. If you do not receive a confirmation email\, or have trouble signing up\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org. \nTo ensure that volunteers provide enough chairs from the storeroom for everyone\, please email member-volunteer group organiser RebeccaERennie@gmail.com with any last-minute RSVPs or cancellations.

SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Description in fact and fiction
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday 22 October from 14:00. \nDescription in fact and fiction \nWhat are the different techniques involved in describing people between fact and fiction? \nAfter the last session\, we concluded that we wanted to discuss some of the differences between description for fiction and description for non-fiction. How much does the reader need to know about how someone looks? What can we say about someone real? Does eye colour\, hair or height make a difference? Does a non-fiction character need description or will a picture do (if we can afford it)? Are there legal implications? Does the length of time since their existence make a difference? \nWe will explore the limits of description\, focussing on character\, real or imagined. How do you help your readers see or get to know your protagonists or characters. \nCome ready to share a few examples of description; bring your own characters or/and some examples of fabulous descriptions or really odd or cliched. \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX. There is a large\, free car park\, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. The meeting room is immediately to your left on entering\, with toilets opposite. The café to the right serves a great selection of non-alcoholic refreshments\, delicious cake etc. \nIf you have accessibility issues\, keep driving: there are two disabled spaces just to the left of the doorway. While the café is generously offering us the meeting room free of charge\, please bring a plastic card or cash to pay for your own refreshments. \nLocal group meet-ups are free to attend. To join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people to expect. We are currently experiencing some issues with our RSVP forms. If the RSVP form does not work\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org to register for the meeting.

SUMMARY:Norfolk & Suffolk Group: Interview with John Shelley
DESCRIPTION:Join the Norfolk & Suffolk Group online on Thursday 22 October from 7pm to hear from illustrator John Shelley. \nBorn in Birmingham to an Anglo-Welsh family\, John Shelley studied at Bournville School of Art\, then in Manchester under children’s illustrator Tony Ross\, before debuting as a book and editorial illustrator in London in the 1980’s. His first trade picture book The Secret in the Matchbox was shortlisted for the Mother Goose Award. A fascination with Japanese art then took him to Tokyo\, where he became a prominent illustrator within the Japanese graphic design industry\, as well as continuing to illustrate children’s books for publishers in Japan and the USA. Aside from illustration\, in Tokyo he was also a fashion model represented by his wife’s agency\, and in his spare time\, enjoyed helping to run events and DJing for several years.  \nAfter 21 years in Japan\, John returned to the UK following the unexpected passing of his wife\, and settled in Norwich to raise his daughter. He now spends his time writing and illustrating\, still largely for overseas clients\, and most recently has begun spinning vinyl again.  \nAs well as award-winning campaigns in the Japanese design industry\, John’s children’s books have received various prizes in the US. With a career illustrating over 60 books for different countries\, he was 5-times nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2018-2022.  \nA former volunteer for the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA)\, and Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI)\, he’s currently a member of the Society of Authors (SOA) and East Anglian Writers. \nThis event will be online. \nAll members welcome from the surrounding area! \nTo join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people are planning to attend. Please contact us with any questions.
