SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Description in fact and fiction
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday 22 October from 14:00. \nDescription in fact and fiction \nWhat are the different techniques involved in describing people between fact and fiction? \nAfter the last session\, we concluded that we wanted to discuss some of the differences between description for fiction and description for non-fiction. How much does the reader need to know about how someone looks? What can we say about someone real? Does eye colour\, hair or height make a difference? Does a non-fiction character need description or will a picture do (if we can afford it)? Are there legal implications? Does the length of time since their existence make a difference? \nWe will explore the limits of description\, focussing on character\, real or imagined. How do you help your readers see or get to know your protagonists or characters. \nCome ready to share a few examples of description; bring your own characters or/and some examples of fabulous descriptions or really odd or cliched. \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX. There is a large\, free car park\, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. The meeting room is immediately to your left on entering\, with toilets opposite. The café to the right serves a great selection of non-alcoholic refreshments\, delicious cake etc. \nIf you have accessibility issues\, keep driving: there are two disabled spaces just to the left of the doorway. While the café is generously offering us the meeting room free of charge\, please bring a plastic card or cash to pay for your own refreshments. \nLocal group meet-ups are free to attend. To join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people to expect. We are currently experiencing some issues with our RSVP forms. If the RSVP form does not work\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org to register for the meeting.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Norfolk & Suffolk Group: Interview with John Shelley
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO LOW NUMBERS\, THIS EVENT WILL NO LONGER TAKE PLACE. \nJoin the Norfolk & Suffolk Group online on Thursday 22 October from 7pm to hear from illustrator John Shelley. \nBorn in Birmingham to an Anglo-Welsh family\, John Shelley studied at Bournville School of Art\, then in Manchester under children’s illustrator Tony Ross\, before debuting as a book and editorial illustrator in London in the 1980’s. His first trade picture book The Secret in the Matchbox was shortlisted for the Mother Goose Award. A fascination with Japanese art then took him to Tokyo\, where he became a prominent illustrator within the Japanese graphic design industry\, as well as continuing to illustrate children’s books for publishers in Japan and the USA. Aside from illustration\, in Tokyo he was also a fashion model represented by his wife’s agency\, and in his spare time\, enjoyed helping to run events and DJing for several years.  \nAfter 21 years in Japan\, John returned to the UK following the unexpected passing of his wife\, and settled in Norwich to raise his daughter. He now spends his time writing and illustrating\, still largely for overseas clients\, and most recently has begun spinning vinyl again.  \nAs well as award-winning campaigns in the Japanese design industry\, John’s children’s books have received various prizes in the US. With a career illustrating over 60 books for different countries\, he was 5-times nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2018-2022.  \nA former volunteer for the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA)\, and Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI)\, he’s currently a member of the Society of Authors (SOA) and East Anglian Writers. \nThis event will be online. \nAll members welcome from the surrounding area! \nTo join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people are planning to attend. Please contact us with any questions.

SUMMARY:Industry Insider - Imagining new funding futures
DESCRIPTION:With the Scottish government recently confirming plans to pilot a basic income scheme for artists\, this panel discussion will survey today’s funding landscape\, imagine some more equitable future possibilities and begin to map out how we might get there. \nCurrent discussions around funding across the publishing industry seem to suffer from a lack of imagination: there is both intense criticism of current situations and\, in some cases\, a desire to return to a past that is unlikely to return. But we are creative people! If anyone can help to imagine equitable and sustainable futures for workers in the books industry\, surely it is the writers\, translators and illustrators who make up the SoA. \nWhile the conversation will have a particular focus on Scotland\, the session is for any writers and book workers who would like to see a better funded publishing industry for everyone. \nThis event is in conjunction with the Society of Authors in Scotland (SoAiS).  \nWhat will this session cover?\n\nDifferent visions for more equitable and sustainable publishing\nThe role of trade unions such as the SoA in making these ideas a reality\nCurrent problems and how to solve them\nTesting new funding models\, such as Universal Basic Income\n\n  \nOnline Industry Insider events – free for all + donation \nAll donations made go towards the Society of Authors’ Access Fund. SUMMARY:Surrey Group: Talk with Tracy Cook
DESCRIPTION:Join the Surrey Group on Tuesday 10 November from 12:00 for a talk with author Tracy Cook. \nTracy Cook is author of Wings over Valletta\, a novel set in Malta in World War Two about a mother’s search for the child she was forced to give up years before. \nTracy will be talking about the challenges of writing historical fiction in the current literary market. She will be looking at how to find great ideas and why they should resonate today\, how to research but without letting the research drive your story\, and how to make your characters feel and sound like real people. \nWe’ll also cover the value of immersion in your era\, the importance of the tiny detail and tackle the biggest question facing any historical novelist – accuracy versus authenticity.  Should we ever change historical fact to better tell our story? \nWe will meet at The Seahorse\, 52-54 The Street\, Shalford\, Guildford\, GU4 8BU. All writerly and bookish guests welcome. \nTo attend the meeting\, click the Going button below and fill out the RSVP form.
