SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Feeling rejected? Rejections and how to deal with them!
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday 20 August from 2pm. \nFeeling rejected? Rejections and how to deal with them! \nAfter 30 rejections\, Stephen King threw his novel Carrie into the “trash” assuming it was useless. John Grisham’s A Time to Kill was also rejected 20 times. T.S. Eliot rejected Orwell’s Animal Farm because he did not agree with its political stance. Lord of the Flies was considered “rubbish and dull”. John le Carre’s first book\, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold\, was rejected on the basis that “it didn’t have any future”… ahem! \nThese novels are classics and bestsellers in their genre\, so how do we deal with our own rejections? Each one of us could have written the next classic\, but how many classics have gone unpublished? Join us to discuss how we deal with rejection\, from soldiering on\, asking for clarification and dealing with how it feels. \nThese and other questions are up for discussion. Bring your favourite rejections and be ready to resend! \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX. There is a large\, free car park\, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. The meeting room is immediately to your left on entering\, with toilets opposite. The café to the right serves a great selection of non-alcoholic refreshments\, delicious cake etc. \nIf you have accessibility issues\, keep driving: there are two disabled spaces just to the left of the doorway. While the café is generously offering us the meeting room free of charge\, please bring a plastic card or cash to pay for your own refreshments. \nLocal group meet-ups are free to attend. To join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people to expect. We are currently experiencing some issues with our RSVP forms. If the RSVP form does not work\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org to register for the meeting.

SUMMARY:Group Chat: Carers Network Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online meet-up on Wednesday 2 September at 2pm.  \nAs we restart our quarterly group chats join us for an informal virtual get-together. This will be a chance to chat to one another and to meet the network co-ordinators\, Robyn Law and Andy Lapham.   \nThese meetings are not recorded to allow for privacy and open discussion. If you have any questions you want support with\, please bring them along to the meeting.  \nAbout the Carers Network   \nThe SoA Carers’ Network supports members who also have caring responsibilities to keep in touch with their professional community\, to keep working and to help each other through difficult times.  \nThere are lots of organisations\, such as Carers UK and Carers Trust that offer practical help\, advice and support to carers. The aim of our network is to offer support to SoA members\, helping them to keep working whilst fulfilling their caring responsibilities.  \nMembers of our network have different caring roles\, responsibilities and experiences\, but they have one thing in common: they’re SoA members.  \nWe run quarterly get-togethers using Zoom\, where you can chat informally online with others. Depending on your computer or device\, you can take part either using audio or video. Please let us know if you have any specific needs that will help you take part.  \nOur online meet-ups are free to attend for Carers Network members only. To join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form. We’ll send you an email with a link to join us on Zoom.  \nIf the confirmation email doesn’t arrive in your inbox\, please check your junk mail folder!   \nIf you have any access questions please contact us at rlaw@societyofauthors.org.

SUMMARY:Brighton and Hove Group: Talk with Stephen Clarke
DESCRIPTION:Join the Brighton and Hove Group on Thursday 10 September from 2pm for a talk with bestselling author Stephen Clarke\, whose extraordinary publishing journey began in 2004 with just 200 self-published copies of a novel\, sold around Paris from a shopping trolley! \nStephen Clarke is an entertaining speaker with invaluable experience of the international publishing market. He has written 31 books\, including the hugely successful A Year in the Merde series and UK number-one bestseller 1000 Years of Annoying the French\, and has experienced the publishing world from both sides. \nIn 2004\, after getting an agent but struggling to find a publisher\, Stephen took matters into his own hands and self-published A Year in the Merde. He sold copies himself in Paris and online\, eventually attracting the attention of literary agent Susanna Lea\, who held an auction between major publishers. The book went on to become a million-selling international hit\, with publishing rights sold around the world. Its sequel\, Merde Actually\, reached number one in the Bookseller’s chart. As a result\, Stephen was invited to do book tours of Europe\, the USA and Australia and New Zealand. \nSince then\, Stephen has gone on to write fiction\, history and humorous non-fiction\, drawing on his experiences of Britain\, France and life as a writer working in an international market. He has now gone back to self-publishing some of his books\, particularly if he thinks there is a niche market to be targeted (eg his latest history book\, Charles Frederick Worth\, the Englishman Who Invented Parisian Haute Couture). His journey from self-publishing an unknown novel to becoming an internationally published and bestselling author makes this a particularly fascinating opportunity for anyone interested in writing and publishing. \nCome along to hear Stephen talk about his career\, his experiences of publishing\, and what he has learned along the way. We’re sure it will be both entertaining and informative. \nWe’ll meet upstairs in The Regency Town House\, 13 Brunswick Square\, Hove\, BN3 1EH. Tea\, coffee and biscuits\, including gluten- and dairy-free options\, will be provided by group organiser Rebecca for a donation of £3 via SumUp. \nThe Regency Town House is a charity and lets us meet here very cheaply\, so please make a donation as you leave if you’re in a position to do so. \nAll members welcome! \nTo attend the meeting\, click the Going button below and fill out the RSVP form. If you do not receive a confirmation email\, or have trouble signing up\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org. \nTo ensure that volunteers provide enough chairs from the storeroom for everyone\, please email member-volunteer group organiser RebeccaERennie@gmail.com with any last-minute RSVPs or cancellations.
